How to broaden your horizons – 5 behaviors to help you change

1. Stop limiting yourself. We keep ourselves stuck a lot of the time by believing in false barriers. Self-limiting beliefs can keep you from living life to the fullest and trying things you wouldn’t normally try, whether you believe something because of experience or because someone told you the “truth.”

Self-limiting beliefs are those that we never question; instead, we accept them as truth… whether they are or not.

For example, if you think you’ll never be able to climb a mountain, guess what? You are unlikely to ever climb a mountain. With the belief that you can’t, you’ve limited what you can achieve.

If you want to broaden your horizons, you must stop limiting yourself to the things that society or yourself have ingrained in your mind and believe that you can. It’s really that simple.

2. Make an effort. It’s not easy to broaden your horizons. We do things a certain way because they are predictable, we know what will happen so it isn’t scary, and they are easier than taking the back roads.

You must put in the extra effort, push yourself to work harder, and be willing to put in the time and go the extra mile if you want to broaden your horizons. I guarantee that the rewards will be far greater than a pat on the back for the same job well done.

3. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. We don’t do things in life because they aren’t “comfortable,” which means they make you uncomfortable or aren’t under your control. If you want to expand your horizons, you’ll have to accept not feeling comfortable or knowing how things will finish, and instead toss caution to the wind.

All of these activities are in direct opposition to what humans are programmed to do. Going outside of our comfort zones makes us uncomfortable because we were created to survive.

That doesn’t mean putting yourself in danger or risking your safety, but it does entail putting yourself in strange or difficult situations and enduring. You’d be shocked at how rapidly the human mind can adjust to make unpleasant situations bearable. That is what it means to extend your horizons.

4. Keep your mouth shut and pay attention. We are usually so preoccupied with telling everyone how things are that we never take the time to listen. It’s fine to question what someone says if you want to broaden your horizons, but it won’t work unless you’re willing to listen and question your own beliefs.

If you are constantly attempting to persuade others that you are correct, you will never consider the possibility that you are not. Sometimes all you have to do to broaden your horizons is close your mouth and let someone else speak for you. You can ask questions later, but yelling at them or refusing to listen to their side will keep you stuck.

5. Why are you doing this? The older I get, the more I understand that I may not know everything I believe I know. It’s possible that I simply believed something that someone told me. I’ve switched from being a Democrat to a Republican and back multiple times throughout my life.

To extend your horizons, if you believe in a religion, political group, or even a cause, you may need to take a step back and ask yourself why you think what you believe, and if it is a fact or just something you have accepted as such without any merit.

It’s like taking a breath of fresh air when you extend your perspective. It allows you to appreciate and be grateful for everything you have.
